Canada Projects Higher Dry Pea and Lentil Harvests for 2025-26

18 Sept 2025

The Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) has revised upward its 2025-26 production estimates for Canada’s key pulse crops—dry peas and lentils—according to its latest August report. The revisions also include adjustments to exports, domestic consumption, and ending stocks, ahead of the Statistics Canada crop production report scheduled for August 28.

For dry peas, AAFC raised its production estimate by 300,000 tonnes, bringing the total to 3.50 million tonnes, up 503,000 tonnes compared to 2024-25. The increase reflects both higher harvested area, rising 109,000 hectares, and improved yields at 2.52 tonnes per hectare, compared with 2.34 tonnes last year.

Dry pea exports are projected at 2.10 million tonnes, slightly below 2024-25’s 2.20 million tonnes, while domestic consumption is expected to increase to 670,000 tonnes, up 58,000 tonnes from the previous year. Ending stocks are forecast at 1.275 million tonnes, significantly higher than the 975,000 tonnes projected last month and more than double the 525,000 tonnes carryover in 2024-25.

For lentils, production is projected at 2.60 million tonnes, up 150,000 tonnes from last year, supported by an increase in harvested area to 1.75 million hectares and improved yields of 1.49 tonnes per hectare. Lentil exports are expected to reach 2.10 million tonnes, about 200,000 tonnes higher than 2024-25, while domestic consumption is estimated at 300,000 tonnes, slightly below last year’s 316,000 tonnes. Ending stocks are projected at 780,000 tonnes, up from 530,000 tonnes in July and substantially higher than 505,000 tonnes in 2024-25.

The AAFC figures indicate a strong supply outlook for Canadian pulses in 2025-26, supporting export opportunities while maintaining robust domestic availability.
